Why is email stuck in outbox?

I'm using gmail on an Android phone, Samsung S10e. Last night 2 emails were stuck in the outbox. This morning I resent them as a "reply to all". They were stuck again. I sent a test email to another email address, and that email is also stuck in outbox.  I successfully transmitted email using gmail from other accounts, so it's not gmail.
